Did Pike Place Roast Impress?

April 8th, 2008 · No Comments · Starbucks

April 8th is now behind us, and with all the hype surrounding Starbucks did it paid off?

I figured that Starbucks would not stray too far outside its parameters of rolling out their new coffee Pike Place Roast; they stuck very close to their heritage of giving away free brewed coffee in order to start conversations about coffee. This time it wasn’t just an exchange, a gimmick or even a marketing ploy. It truly was an ice breaker about really good coffee.

The “major coast-to-coast celebrations beginning in New York City and ending in Seattle” was something that was truly something else. It started with a replica of the original Seattle Starbucks store in Bryant Park, New York. The celebrations ended up at Pike Place Market, Seattle. CEO Howard Shultz spoke at both events, with live music and coffee tasting by Starbucks Coffee Masters.

With all the cloaked secrecy and build up, I felt a lot of individuals were let down with Starbucks. Many thought it would be splashy, new and something never done before. I think Starbucks did the right move and brought it back-to-basics. The emphasis was clearly on two things; coffee and the Pike Place Market store where it all began. As for the skeptics, once they tasted Pike Place Roast I believe they realized that this coffee is something new and something never done before. For once, it’s a coffee that every customer will enjoy and talk about.
