5 Reasons why the Stock Market is Boring (to other people)

December 30th, 2007 · 2 Comments · Stock Market

While collecting information to further understand where my friends and family were on the ideas of the stock market, the economy and business in general I came up with these key reasons on why they thought the Stock Market is boring.

1. Its just numbers - If you open any business section on the weekend usually in the middle are columns upon columns of symbols and numbers. When you try to find a certain company in that mess, they all blend together. In our digital age stocks are intangible and only appear as a ticker on a screen while many individuals want a ‘brick and mortar’ feel. They want to be able to see and ‘feel’ where they are putting investments in order to understand what it does and how it works.

2. The media portrays it only for those who are rich- You see in the news, movies and TV shows that only Wall Street Executives are involved in the stock market. They seem to have ‘extra’ money to pay others to handle their finances and not second guess it. They drive in their fancy cars with their Bluetooth earpieces and dry cleaned suits. Most people are not these people and do not want to be that person either, it’s always that person speaking gibberish in the corner to themselves at Starbucks.

3. Investing takes time and a little bit of Homework - No one could understand investing let alone the market at first glance. Most people are too lazy to jump into something complex and time consuming. Spending time looking at profit margins, fiscal outlooks and P/E ratios seem like torture.

4. The Stock Market isn’t a reality show- If you watch the business channel for any length of time it never it doesn’t have cliff hangers or endurance challenges. The only times things when it really heats up are when two individuals disagree on the possibility of a recession…racy! There isn’t any drama, or conflict that people find entertaining/exciting. Without some sort of entertainment value attached it’s often discarded as worthless or dull.

5. The Stock Market doesn’t seem relevant- The connection between Wall Street and Main Street isn’t clear. We don’t see the impact of fluctuations of the market in our everyday lives, therefore there really any reason to pay attention to it.
